FOOT EXERCISES

Toning and strengthening the muscles of the feet are quite important. The following exercise is best done while lying on your back on the floor. Start by rotating each foot in a circle at the ankle, first clockwise, then counterclockwise, and repeat both directions. Then extend the heels and then the toes, and repeat both actions. Cautiously make a fist with the toes of one foot. Then relax and go to the other foot. Alternate from one foot to the other, each time flexing more strenuously, as the tissues tone up. If you make fists with the toes daily, you will reach the point where you can make as strong a fist with your toes as you can with your fingers. Next, alternately spread and release the toes of both feet. Then alternately tap the heels of the feet against the floor to stimulate the bones and the flow of ch’i. Next, clap the insides of the feet together.

Feel the effect throughout the whole body between each exercise and the next. You should find that these simple exercises will give your feet a new lease on life. Whereas the above routine can be done at any time of the day or night, much benefit is achieved by doing it in the early morning before you get out of bed and put weight on your feet (you can find a way to tap the heels on the floor while lying or sitting on the bed). Later in the day, when the feet have been encased in shoes for a period of time, they will be more susceptible to spasm, and the foot exercises should be done with extra caution.
